I often find myself praying blessings over babies when I drop off meals for new moms or welcome them into our church nursery, and I’d love to share this Biblical blessing for a new baby with you.
It’s perfect for a baptism/dedication, a birth, or anytime you want to pray God’s word over a baby!
(You will probably notice it sounds a lot like Psalm 139. That’s because it’s basically a re-wording of it! That means you don’t need to pull up this blog post when you are ready to pray for a baby, you just need to pull out a Bible!)
PS There are 2 versions – I wanted to avoid having you read he/she all the time!
MALE BLESSING FOR A NEW BABY:
I praise you God that You have searched _________, Lord,
and you know him.
You know when _________ sits and when he rises;
you perceive his thoughts from afar, even though his thoughts are still unformed.
You discern his going out and his lying down;
you are familiar with all his ways.
Before any words are on _________’s tongue
you, Lord, know them all completely.
You hem him in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon him.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for us,
too lofty for us to understand.
Thank you for loving and choosing _________ before he has any ability to respond.
Where can _________ go from your Spirit?
Where can he flee from your presence?
If he goes up to the heavens, you are there;
if he makes his bed in the depths, you are there.
If he rises on the wings of the dawn,
if he settles on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide _________,
your right hand will hold him fast.
If _________ says, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
For you created _________’s inmost being;
you knit him together in his mother’s womb.
I praise you because _________ is fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
we know that full well.
_________’s frame was not hidden from you
when he was made in the secret place,
when he was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw _________’s unformed body;
all the days ordained for him were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How vast is the sum of your thoughts toward _________, God!
Were we to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when _________ awakes, he is still with you.
As he grows, search _________, God, and know his heart;
test him and know his anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in _________,
and lead him in the way everlasting.
AMEN.
